   Congratulations on completing the classroom and pool diving portion of your PADI Open Water Scuba Diver Course at Huron Scuba! You are now signed up for the Open Water Certification program that, upon successful completion, results in earning your PADI Open Water Diver certification card.  If you purchased Huron Scuba's Complete Open Water Diver Package during 2006-07, there is no charge by Huron Scuba for the five dives or basic rental equipment used in this course. Otherwise, the instruction fee is $119 and the basic rental equipment package is $79.
   Your instructor will assign buddy pairs using his/her best judgment and require that you successfully perform all of the skills you acquired in the pool. You will also be taught to use your compass underwater.  If you do not feel ready for certification dives, contact us immediately to schedule additional instruction. If you have not been diving within six months, a refresher course is mandatory to improve your comfort, safety, and likelihood of success during this course.
Travel Information:
   You are signed up for the dates & times listed above. Check in at the Gilboa Quarry office at the listed start time; arrive a few minutes early so you may park in the main lot. Expect the drive to Gilboa Quarry from Ann Arbor to be at least 1 hr 50 min.
   DON'T PLAN TO DRIVE HOME BETWEEN DIVE DAYS. You will need a good night's sleep. There are campsite and bunkhouse accommodations available at the quarry (reservations recommended). There are also several hotels within about 20 minutes of the quarry. We recommend the Rodeway Inn in Findlay, OH as an economical choice (419-424-1133) - ask for the "Huron Scuba Special."
   As a group, the class will conduct dive planning and other training exercises during a group dinner the evening between dives. Family and friends are invited to dinner; please let your instructor know who is coming so that he/she may get a big enough table.

You should bring about $65-80 cash for air fills, parking, and meals.

It is highly recommended that you upgrade your DAN Student Insurance to regular status before your dives because the student insurance provides limited coverage and expires as soon as you complete your last certification dive. Call DAN at 1-800-446-2671 and tell them you want to upgrade your student membership; use Sponsor Code #414981.

Make sure we have taken your passport photo to use for your certification card, which will save you the time, expense, and related delay of obtaining those photographs after certification.

Consider upgrading your Open Water Certification Dives: Certify in a drysuit, or become a certified PADI Drysuit Diver, become a PADI National Geographic Diver, and/or upgrade your equipment to include a dive computer and a set of gloves.
Equipment Information:
You must complete a rental reservation form and reserve specific equipment at least 2 weeks prior to class to ensure you get the equipment and sizing that you desire (no later than __________). For any tank, regulator or BCD you plan to use during any water training (other than Huron Scuba rental gear), you must provide proof that it has been serviced by (or purchased from) a factory-certified and authorized dive center within the past year. This information should be supplied at least two weeks prior to class (no later than __________). Full service and bench checks are available at Huron Scuba.
The fit & function of your equipment is essential to the safety, enjoyment & quality of education for everyone involved. A Huron Scuba Divemaster or Instructor must inspect your personal equipment at least two weeks prior to class (no later than __________). Unapproved equipment may not be used. A list of acceptable equipment features is available on request. Remember, students in Open Water Scuba Diver training get unlimited exchange for fit at Huron Scuba.

GILBOA QUARRY DIRECTIONS
To get to Gilboa Quarry:
From Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor area:
  • Go South on US23 to Toledo, follow signs to I-75 South.
  • Take I-75 South past Toledo and Bowling Green, to State Road 224 (Exit 159).
  • Turn right on State Road 224, go about 14 miles to Gilboa Road.
  • Turn left (south) on Pearl St just after the grain elevator, right before the large cement steer (picture at right).
  • Turn right (west) at the 4-way Stop sign 2 blocks south, just before you go over the bridge, and head through "downtown" Gilboa.
  • As you head west out of Gilboa, the quarry entrance is on the left (south side) of the road down in a slight dip in the road about 1/4 mile past the Methodist church (located on the west edge of town).

  • Directions: get off the normal Gilboa Quarry exit #159 from I-75, turn left (east) and go over the highway overpass. Keep going about a half mile to the light at Broad Ave, turn left (north). Go about 1/4 and on right side is Rodeway Inn.  It will take 3-5 minutes driving from the exit.
  • When checking in, ask for the Waffle House coupon for breakfast and the Dakota Grill $5 off coupon for dinner. 
  • Getting to the quarry in the morning will take twenty minutes
